ABOUT THE FDNY EMERALD SOCIETY

ESTABLISHED 1956
Our Roots
The FDNY Emerald Society was founded in 1956 with the goal of celebrating Irish-American heritage within the FDNY. Our mission is to honor and remember all those who served—and those who made the ultimate sacrifice—both before our founding and through the present day.
The New York City Fire Department was officially established in 1865. In the years before and after its formation, Irish-Americans overwhelmingly took on the most dangerous and demanding roles in firefighting, police work, and military service. These men served with courage and resilience in a city—and a country—that often displayed signs reading “Irish Need Not Apply.”
More than 160 years later, the Irish-American spirit of hard work, dedication, and sacrifice remains the cornerstone of the department.
Today, we are a proud organization representing both active and retired New York City firefighters and fire officers. Each day, we strive to honor those who came before us. We are committed to preserving the traditions of our forefathers, upholding firehouse culture, and embracing the enduring values of faith, family, and friendship.
